A graphic tee looks relaxed instead of sloppy when three things line up: the shoulder seam sits on your shoulder bone, the hem lands near your belt line, and the print is the loudest thing in the outfit. Below is the order to work in, then the detail behind each step. The fit advice applies to men's graphic tees and to unisex cuts alike.
How to style a graphic tee
- Check the fabric: heavyweight, garment-dyed, ring-spun cotton drapes softly and hides creases.
- Lay a tee you already own flat and measure it from underarm seam to underarm seam.
- Pick true size for a clean fit, or one size up (about 2 inches more chest width) for a boxy look.
- Choose one of the four outfits in Step 3.
- Wash it cold and inside out. Dry it low or on a line.
Step 1: What garment-dyed cotton does to drape
Garment-dyed means the shirt is sewn first and dyed afterward in a drum. The fabric and seams soften together, so the tee hangs with small natural wrinkles instead of stiff, flat panels. Ring-spun yarn is twisted finer than open-end yarn, which gives the print a smoother surface to sit on. Heavyweight usually means about 6 ounces per square yard or more, and that weight hangs away from your body instead of clinging to it.
The common mistake is judging weight from a product photo. Pick the shirt up: a thin tee in the same size clings at the stomach and reads as tight, not relaxed. Garment-dyed color also looks slightly faded by design, so keep the rest of the outfit plain and let the tee do the talking.
Step 2: Pick your size with a chest-width check
Lay your best-fitting tee flat on a bed and measure straight across from one underarm seam to the other. Many adult medium tees land near 20 inches. Then compare that number with the size chart of the tee you plan to buy, because chart labels differ between brands and the measurement does not.
For a clean fit, choose the size within 1 inch of your own tee. For a boxy look, choose the size about 2 inches wider, which is usually one size up. Check the shoulder seam before sizing up: if it already hangs more than an inch past your shoulder bone, the cut is built roomy and a bigger size will swallow you. The sleeve should end halfway between shoulder and elbow, and the hem should reach your belt line at true size.

Step 3: Four looks that work
Look 1: Straight jeans and clean sneakers
Pick jeans with a straight leg that clears the sneaker without stacking at the ankle. White or grey low-tops go best with them. At true size, wear the tee untucked. In a size up, tuck about 3 inches of the front at one belt loop. Do not tuck the whole shirt: a boxy tee tucked all the way around bunches into a bulge at the waist.
Look 2: Under an open overshirt
Use a solid cotton twill or flannel overshirt. Leave the buttons undone and push the sleeves to mid-forearm. The overshirt hem should sit 1 to 2 inches below the tee hem so the tee does not peek out underneath. Choose an overshirt in a quieter color than the print, and the graphic stays readable through the open front. Picking between a quote print and an artwork print is its own question, covered in Text Tee vs Animal Art Tee.
Look 3: With shorts or a midi skirt
With shorts, aim for a 5 to 7 inch inseam and leave the tee untucked. With a midi skirt, tuck only the front into the waistband and let the back hang. Keep the shoes simple, such as leather sandals or the same clean sneakers, so the outfit reads as weekend wear and not as an afterthought.

Look 4: Layered under a jacket
A denim jacket, bomber, or chore coat works well here. Leave it zipped or buttoned only halfway so roughly 6 inches of print shows. Match the fit to the jacket: a true-size tee sits flat under a fitted jacket, and a boxy tee needs a roomy jacket. A boxy tee under a fitted one bunches at the ribs.
Step 4: Wash it so the print and softness last
- Turn the tee inside out so the print does not rub against other fabric.
- Wash in cold water, 86°F (30°C) or below, with similar colors.
- Skip fabric softener, which can leave a film on the print.
- Tumble on low for 10 to 15 minutes and hang it to finish, or dry it on a line in shade.
- If you iron, iron inside out and never press directly on the print.
Garment-dyed color fades gradually with washing. That is the broken-in look, so it is not a sign the tee is failing.
Step 5: Tee or hoodie? A rule by temperature and activity
Above 65°F (18°C), wear the tee alone. Between 50°F and 65°F, wear it under an overshirt or jacket. Below 50°F, switch to a hoodie or put the tee under a heavy coat. Then adjust for activity: if you will stand still outdoors, such as at a market or a game, go one layer warmer than the number says. If you will walk briskly, go one layer lighter. The cold-weather side of this rule gets its own walkthrough in How to Style a Graphic Hoodie for Men.
